Socialism 101

UIC Student Center East, Monarch Room 750 S Halsted St. Chicago, IL

Open meeting hosted by the UIC International Socialist Club

Socialism is an old idea--based on the premise that there's enough wealth in society to go around. Under capitalism, people get rich off the work of others, and resources are unfairly controlled in the hands of a few fat cats at the top of society.

Just look at our campus to see how this works--Tuition for incoming students at our public university went up 9% over last year (plus the tuition differentials for students in the graduate college went up for many departments), yet the Administration refuses to offer the campus workers represented by SEIU Local 73 the modest wage increases it is asking for. At the same time, the new President Hogan got a 37% raise over what the last President made.

That, and the robbery of public funds to rescue Wall Street, while millions are unemployed and facing foreclosure--is socialism for the rich. What would socialism from below, for working people and students, look like?

Join this discussion to hear from the student activists about the genuine socialist alternative and how you can get involved in the fight for a better world at UIC.
