March with the ISO Contingent - Protest the NATO Warmakers!

May 20 2012 - 10:30am - 4:00pm

Protest the NATO warmakers!
March with the International Socialist Organization contingent

This Sunday, join us at the mass protest against the NATO summit and march in the socialist contingent.

While the bureaucrats and leaders of the world's military industrial complex plan their strategies of war and occupation, we must make our voices heard in the streets.
We demand an end to the occupation of Afghanistan, which generates one atrocity after another, and the ongoing military actions in Iraq and elsewhere.

Meet us at the southeast corner of the Jackson St. entrance to Grant Park at 10:30am - look for ISO placards, banners, and Socialist Worker newspaper.

RESISTING AUSTERITY AND WAR FROM CHICAGO TO ATHENS fundraiser party • banner-making • political discussion

May 19 2012 - 7:30pm - 10:30pm

The whole world will be watching Chicago as the NATO summit convenes to plan more war and destruction. As we show NATO that their war agenda is not welcome in our city, we stand with the ordinary people in Greece, France, Eygpt and all over the world who have demonstrated that the 1%’s plan for austerity and domination will be met with resistance.

Join the International Socialist Organization for banner-making, political conversation, and refreshments as we gear up to protest the war-mongers. Food and drink will be available for purchase to raise funds for the Socialism 2012 conference.

Still Separate, Still Unequal:
Racism, Class, and the Attack on Public Education

Public education is under an unprecedented attack. The powerful people who want to privatize our schools are using many different means: charter schools, mayoral control, high stakes standardized testing, school closures, merit pay and attacking teacher unions are all a part of this assault. Often, these "reformers" claim that the
sweeping changes they want will bring genuine educational justice for communities that have long been underserved—especially for African American families. But will privatization actually create racial justice? Or will it exacerbate the problem? Will these "reforms" strengthen the educational rights of students and parents, or weaken them? Will turning education over to the free market lead to less segregated schools, or more so? Who is behind the effort to privatize education and why are they pursuing these changes? Is there an alternative way to reform our public schools? Come to a discussion of these and other urgent questions.

Childcare will be provided.

Action to Demand a One-year Moratorium on Foreclosures and Evictions!

May 16 2012 - 10:00am - 12:00pm

Communities United Against Foreclosure and Eviction and Occupy Chicago demand that Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart STOP all profit-oriented evictions and foreclosures from May 16, 2012 to May 16, 2013.

This is part of a week of actions, the entire schedule for which can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/events/295772130492710/.

We are moved to this action because of the intolerable losses suffered by our communities, friends, and families that we have witnessed: losses to businesses, to community life, and to family life; disruptions to the educational and social life of our children; and heightened neighborhood crime and insecurity.

Because the “housing crisis” was generated by banks flagrantly violating all standards of responsible banking, this national disaster is more accurately called a “banking crisis,” and through this moratorium, we are requesting that you stand with us to protect our ravaged communities from the many predations we have suffered.

This moratorium will place the human right to housing above the "right" of banks to make a profit off of empty homes. If Sheriff Dart does not grant the moratorium, the People will enforce one themselves!
----------------------------------
Schedule for May 16th:
10am: Rally at Jackson and LaSalle

10:30am: March to Citibank. Homeowners currently facing foreclosure by Citibank will share their stories.

11am: March to Daley Plaza for Press Conference and Delivery of Petitions to Tom Dart's office.

Please sign the Petition here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/cook-county-moratorium-on-foreclosure...

PLEASE SHARE WIDELY!
